If you’ve ever considered exploring a vineyard on the Eastern end of Long Island, then you’ve probably heard the term “Long Island Wine Trail” or “North Fork Wine Trail.” But what exactly is this trail? And how do you navigate it?
For some visitors, especially those from outside of New York, the term can be a little misleading. Is it a walking trail? A hiking trail? How many wineries are on the trail, and can you visit them all?
Here’s what you need to know.
The Long Island Wine Trail is a term used to describe an area of Eastern Long Island that is home to more than 40 wineries situated in close proximity to each other. The term is typically used in reference to the many vineyards scattered along a 20-mile stretch of the North Fork of Long Island (also referred to as the North Fork Wine Trail). However, the term is also sometimes used in reference to the handful of wineries on the South Fork, an area known as the Hamptons.
The best way to explore the Long Island Wine Trail is with a chauffeured wine tour. Although the wineries are located relatively close together, you’ll still need a vehicle to get around if you plan to visit multiple locations. A chauffeured winery tour will allow you to safely visit multiple destinations without worrying about doing any of the driving yourself.
Long Island wineries are scattered throughout the North Fork and the Hamptons, but most are situated along Route 25, Route 25A and Route 40.
